Important tips for maintaining healthy eyesight

We know how important eyesight is for us. But still, most of us take it for granted.

Let us assure you that loss of vision and vision impairment are no trifling issues. All across the world, there are about 25 million men who have lost their eyesight and about 80 million of them have erratic vision.

Let's see what you can do for maintaining your vision in a great shape:

Regular Eye Checkup from a Qualified Doctor

Most serious vision problems are the byproducts of eye diseases like age-related macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and cataract. It is very important that such diseases are detected early and the treatment starts ASAP.

And for their detection, it's important that you have an eye checkup scheduled every six months. A qualified eye-specialist can detect the problem even before the signs show up.

Wearing Sunglasses

While we never forget to apply sunscreen while going out in the sun, we hardly care about our eyes. You need not look directly into the sun to get your eyes damaged. The sun's UV rays can be reflected off snow, sand, pavement, and water.

The UV rays make eyes more vulnerable to cataracts, age-related macular degeneration. They are even capable of causing sunburn to the cornea in a condition called photokeratitis which can further lead to temporary blindness.

So make this a habit that whenever you go out in the sun, you put on your sunglasses. And it goes without saying that the sunglasses you use should offer 100% UV protection.

Avoid Straining the Eyes

Short-term effects of eyestrain include eye pain, watering, blurry or double vision, and headacanhes. Working on a computer for long hours does affect eyes to some extent. However, the new-age LCD monitors have very little impact on the eyes. Nevertheless, here are some tips:

1.Use a glare filter if required.
2.Try changing the angle of the monitor.
3.Avoid sitting too close to the monitor.
4.Follow the 20/20/20 rule. Every 20 minutes, look at least 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Protecting the Eyes

Apart from the diseases, injuries can also play havoc on the eyes and the vision. People involved in hazardous work must wear safety goggles. Apart from that, wear protective eyewear when:

1.Using a lawnmower as it can accidentally pick up rocks and stones.
2.Working on a car, as battery acid, sparks and debris can damage the eyes.
3.Dealing with chemicals (for example making a chemistry project for college).
4.Bursting crackers. Injuries from pyrotechnics can be horrible.

Exercise and Eye-friendly Diet

While eating of carrots may not drastically improve your vision, getting essential vitamins and minerals is certainly good for your eyes. Live on a healthy, balanced diet which is full of vitamins A, E and C, as well as zinc, copper, selenium, and antioxidants. Speak to your doctor about various easily doable eye-exercises. Also, never start wearing contact lenses without consulting a doctor
