The Global Phenomenon: BYOD

The fun fact that there are more mobile devices in the world than toothbrushes is pretty well known. But did you know 89% of IT departments worldwide support bring your own device (BYOD) practices?

That's just one of the findings discovered by an expanded Cisco InterBYOD, it's globalnet Business Solutions Group (CIBSG) survey of mobile device usage. To really understand how global "Bring Your Own Device" (BYOD) usage had become, CIBSG decided to revise and expand its original BYOD and Virtualization study to include businesses of all sizes, regions, and countries. The results were staggering.
Popularity of BYOD growing in Asia and Latin America

Although it still has a bit of regional flavor, where Asian and Latin American businesses see – and encourage – extensive use of BYOD policies, while European firms tend to be more cautious and restrictive. In all regions BYOD popularity knows no bounds when it comes to the size of the business. Here are some of the latest findings from this study:

69% of IT leaders globally feel that the benefits of BYOD are positive and transformational

Most employees feel strongly that BYOD offers choice on how, where, and when they work to strike a better balance between personal and work lives

Overall, executives believe that BYOD implies new challenges in security and IT support and requires improved mobile policies and cost-reduction strategies

Attitudes toward BYOD are consistent across the board for small and midsize businesses as well as large, global enterprises

The U.S. is the overall leader in BYOD adoption and policy, but the U.S. shares first place with India when it comes to desktop virtualization

It has the potential to change which companies succeed on the global stage

The global attitude towards Bring Your Own Device can have interesting implications for the future. In the coming years, the growth of mobile devices and network traffic will have a profound impact on IT budgets in several countries.

Higher current adoption and growth will quickly make BYOD the predominant approach in the Americas, Asia, and Latin America. However, European companies could suffer in comparison to those in competing countries that are using BYOD to harness employee-driven improvements in productivity, collaboration, and execution. And that can change how business is done in the global market.
